The Ajax Buildings, located in Fremantle’s West End Heritage Area, are a significant example of Federation-era architecture. This mixed-use property, comprising ground-floor retail tenancies and first-floor residential apartments, contributes to the historic character and commercial vibrancy of the precinct. Constructed in the early 20th century, the buildings reflect Fremantle’s development as a merchant port and urban centre.
Ailtire Architects have been involved since 2019, leading a phased conservation program guided by the Conservation Management Plan prepared that year. Their work addresses long-standing issues including rising damp, structural cracking, and deterioration of timber joinery and external finishes. Key interventions include the removal of damaging cement render from limestone walls, repointing with lime mortar, stabilisation of cracked masonry, and restoration of timber windows and doors using traditional methods. Repairs to barge boards, cladding, and masonry around openings have also been undertaken.
These efforts aim to restore the heritage integrity of the Ajax Buildings while improving their durability and functionality. Ailtire’s approach ensures the buildings remain a valuable part of Fremantle’s architectural and community landscape.
