The Centenary and Administration Buildings of the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA), located in the Perth Cultural Centre, are significant heritage-listed structures. The Administration Building, originally constructed in 1897 as the Police Barracks, and the Centenary Gallery, built in 1905 as the Perth Court of Petty Sessions, reflect Federation-era public architecture. These buildings feature robust masonry construction and classical detailing, contributing to the architectural diversity and historical depth of the precinct. Today, they serve as key operational and exhibition spaces within AGWA.
Ailtire Architects undertook conservation works to address deterioration in these buildings, including water ingress, ceiling and wall cracking, and aging materials. The scope included roof and rainwater system works, external stone cleaning and conservation. All works were guided by heritage conservation principles to ensure compatibility with original materials and architectural features.
These interventions have helped preserve the architectural integrity and extended the functional life of AGWA’s heritage buildings. Ailtire’s work has reinforced their cultural value and ensured their continued contribution to Western Australia’s vibrant arts landscape.
