BILLS BOOKS, FREMANTLE

Bills Books, located in Fremantle’s West End Heritage Area, occupies a two-storey Federation Free Style commercial building constructed during the gold boom period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Listed on the State Register of Heritage Places (Place No. 25225), the building features a distinctive parapet, prominent pediments, engaged columns, and large decorative sash windows. It has long contributed to the character and commercial history of Fremantle’s High Street.

Ailtire Architects were engaged to undertake urgent conservation works focused on structural and aesthetic issues at the rear of the building and within the roof structure. The existing cement render on the rear elevation was removed, and the underlying brickwork was fully restored using lime mortar. Stainless steel bracing was installed to reinforce the historic timber roof trusses, addressing long-standing structural vulnerabilities.

These works have strengthened the building’s integrity and preserved its architectural character. Ailtire’s careful intervention ensures the continued commercial use of the property while contributing to the vibrancy and heritage value of Fremantle’s historic precinct.
