The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) building, located in the Perth Cultural Centre, is a prominent heritage-listed structure originally constructed in 1897 as the Central Perth Boys’ and Girls’ School. Designed in the Federation Free Classical style, the building features red brick masonry, a landmark clock tower, and decorative stucco detailing. Over its history, it has served as a school, technical college, and, since 1991, a contemporary arts centre hosting exhibitions, performances, and creative offices.
Ailtire Architects led recent conservation works focused on addressing structural and fabric issues while retaining the building’s heritage significance. Key interventions included the restoration of lime plaster and lath ceilings in the Main and West Galleries, a full audit of roofing and rainwater goods, and the installation of mechanical services throughout the building. All works were carried out in accordance with heritage conservation principles.
These efforts have preserved the architectural integrity of the PICA building while enhancing its functionality. Ailtire’s work ensures the site remains a dynamic cultural hub and a vital part of Western Australia’s artistic landscape
