The Sunset Heritage Precinct, located in Dalkeith, Perth, is a historically significant site comprising a collection of Federation Arts and Crafts-style buildings established in 1904 as the Claremont Old Men’s Home. Later renamed Sunset Hospital in 1941, the precinct served as a public health facility until its closure in 1995. Set on a 7.9-hectare riverside site, the buildings reflect early 20th-century institutional architecture and remain a rare example of their kind in Western Australia.
Ailtire Architects led the preparation of an updated Conservation Management Plan (CMP), alongside a comprehensive Building Condition Assessment (BCA) and a brief Feasibility Study. Working with a team of sub-consultants, they conducted detailed investigations—including drone surveys of inaccessible areas—to assess the condition of 13 buildings and the surrounding landscape. These assessments provided clear, actionable recommendations for future conservation works.
Ailtire’s work has laid the foundation for the long-term preservation and adaptive reuse of the Sunset Heritage Precinct. Their strategic guidance ensures the site’s cultural significance is protected while enabling informed restoration planning for generations to come.
